[2016.05.02] Soprano Sooyeon Kim and Ramon Vargas in Olomouc Music Festival
Olomouc, a city in Moravia. It has always been one of the important cities in the Kingdom of Bohemia. It’s advantageous position near the lake and cultural traditions of the city makes it a great place to celebrate classical music. However, this particular opening concert of Olomouc Music Festival got many people excited. On the 2nd of May, the powerful soprano Sooyeon Kim and world-class tenor Ramon Vargas are to be performing on the first night. Audiences had high expectation for Kim, who came to the festival again in two years, and Vargas; and they delivered.
The lights dimmed and the audience silenced. As the members of the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor entered, the people begin to applaud with anticipation. Then, after a couple of moments, the stars appeared. People cheered with joy, as they knew exactly who they were, soprano Sooyeon Kim and tenor Ramon Vargas. Many were glad that Kim returned to the Olomouc Music Festival. In 2014, Kim performed a duet with tenor Jonas Kaufmann. Together, they have created a magical atmosphere.
The long awaited performance begun, as the orchestra set the mood for the soprano. The first song was “Un bel di vedremo” from <Madame Butterfly>. The listeners were saddened by the desperate voice of a woman, who has been told by her maid that her love won’t return, was addressed quickly. Following, Kim sang “Mesicku na nebi” from Dvorak’s opera <Rusalka>. The people of Czech Republic listened carefully. They were able to identify and quickly relate to the lyrics of the song that Kim effortlessly conveyed. After the soprano finished her solo performance, the audience sent their ‘brava!’. At the height of the atmosphere, Ramon Varas appeared for their duet. Starting with “Ah! Talor del tuo pensiero” from opera <Laucia di Lammermoor> by Donizetti and “O soave faniciulla” by Puccini in the opera <La boheme>, both operatic singers shocked the audience with their glorious voice and melodic songs. The festival couldn’t have a better opening than tonight’s concert. The audience fell in love with the voices of the two musicians and couldn’t help, but to demand more. And both artists happily obliged.
As their ending, the soprano and the tenor presented a celebratory song from the opera <La Travita>. People swayed left and right at the sound of the orchestra’s beat, as if they were dancing in a ballroom. Whatsmore, the hall felt like a ballroom. The opening concert was one of the greatest concert one could have imagined. The mood was set for the festival and the people were hyped for the next concert. However, one could only wonder when the two performers will ever stand on stage together again.
