첼리스트 여미혜, 크로아티아의 역사를 품은 자그레브 솔로이스츠의 정기연주회에 초청되어 협연하다.
불과 몇 년 전만해도 한국인들에게 크게 인식되어있지 않았던 크로아티아는 영상미디어를 통해
반드시 한번쯤은 여행해 봐야 할 그런 나라가 되었다. 천혜의 자연환경이라는 축복을 받은 나라지만 구 유고슬라비아 연방의 해체와 내전을 거쳐 1991년 6월 분리 독립한 시련과 극복의 시간이 담긴 나라이기도 하다. 그 속에서 그들의 삶은 물리적인 것 못지않게 심적인 치유의 시간이 필요했을 것이다. 그런 이곳에서 1953년 설립되어 저명한 첼리스트 Antonio Janigro의 예술적인 리더십 아래 성장해온 자그레브 솔리이스츠라는 앙상블은 현재 세계에서 뛰어난 챔버 오케스트라로서 인정받으며, 크로아티아를 대표하고 있다. 그런 그들이 유럽과 아시아를 넘나들며, 활약하는 한국이 낳은 첼리스트 여미혜를 자신들의 정기연주회에 초청했다.
그녀가 크로아티아의 관객들에게 들려주게 된 하이든의 첼로 협주곡 2번 D장조는 1783년경에 완성되어, 슈만, 드보르자크의 작품과 더불어 3대 첼로 협주곡으로 꼽히며, 독주 악기로서의 첼로의 가능성을 열어주는 원숙한 기교와 감성이 물씬 느껴지는 곡이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 첼로를 하는 연주자에게 있어서는 반드시 거치게 되는 가장 기본적이지만 그래서 더 어려울 수 있는, 사전과도 같은 협주곡이라 할 수 있다. 소나타 형식으로 구성된, 1악장 Allegro moderato가 시작되고, 첼리스트 여미혜의 활과 현의 스침은 뭔가 무게감 있으면서도 오랜 세월의 노련미로 대표되는 첼로가 얼마나 사랑스러우면서도 이제 막 사랑에 빠진 듯한 젊음의 생기를 담고 있는 악기인지를 깨닫게 만들었다. 2악장 Adagio가 시작되면서, 자그레브 솔로이스츠의 풍부한 음색과 기품 있는 사운드를 바탕으로, 첼리스트 여미혜는 첼로가 가진 가장 큰 장점인 원숙함을 2악장에 모두 쏟아내는 듯 했다. 알고 있는 첼로의 가장 대표적인 특성에 무릎을 치며, 바로 이것이다라는 감탄이 나올 것 같았다. 그리고 이어진 마지막 3악장 Allegro에서는 2악장에서 느려졌던 분위기가 다시 조금 빠르게 움직이면서 첼리스트 여미혜의 음색이 드러내는 다양한 기교 속에서 화려함으로 곡의 마지막을 장식했다.
어떠한 무대이든지, 솔리스트만 도드라지거나 오케스트라만 도드라진다면 완성도 높은 연주라
할 수 없을 것이다. 음악이란 철저한 계산 그 아래, 인간의 감정이라는 것을 깔고, 연주자로 하여금 자신의 감정을 숨길 수 없게 만드는 힘을 가지고 있기에 관객들도 연주자들의 마음을 고스란히 읽을 수 밖에 없다. 약 20분 정도에 걸쳤던 이번 협연에서 자그레브 솔로이스츠는 중심이 되는 첼리스트의 음색이 아름답게 날갯짓 할 수 있도록 바람처럼 적당한 속도와 흐름으로 분위기를 만들었고, 첼리스트 여미혜는 그 바람 사이로 자유로이 날갯짓하는 아름다운 새처럼 자신의 음색을 펼쳐 보였다. 서로의 대한 신뢰와 존중, 가장 자연스럽기에 그저 그것이 다른 손에서 나오는 소리라고는 인지하기 어려울 만큼, 그들의 조화로웠던 음색은 서로를 더욱 빛나게 했다. 그리고 필자를 비롯했던 다른 관객들 모두 하나와도 같았던 그들의 연주를 보며, 진정한 하모니의 의미를 다시 한 번 되새기게 되었다.

Cellist Meehae Ryo performs with authentic Zagreb Soloist in Croatia
Since the conlcusion of the Croatian War of Independence, the tourist industry has grown, making Croatia one of the most popular tourist country. The sweet balance between infrastructure and nature makes the country attractive to many people, including musicians such as Antonio Janigro. The Zagreb Soloist was formed in 1953, under the leadership of extraordinary cellist and conductor Janigro. Currently, the ensemble is internationally praised for their wonderful virtuosity and talent. In addition to the Zagreb Soloist came along cellist Meehae Ryo, an international soloist who has been critically praised her Deutsche Grammphone discography and her concert activity, as an invited performer.
The first theme introduces a mood of delightful repose which is slightly modified, but not interrupted, by the pleasing chromaticism of the second theme. When the soloist reiterates the first theme, adding beautiful, and technically demanding, ornamentation, the listener is able to enjoy the balanced, mellifluous interplay between the soloist and the orchestral accompaniment. In the Adagio, which the soloist opens opens with an expansive, almost dreamy, theme, the feeling of tranquillity is maintained. Yet, as in the first movement, what the composer conveys to the listener is not languor, but a realization that intuitions of wisdom and beauty can, and sometimes must, be savored slowly, even if that offends the impatient listener. Once the orchestra softly restates the opening tune, the cello indulges in a quiet cadenza and leads the orchestra into a brief coda. The final Allegro is a rondo revolving around a bright pastoral tune of an almost childlike simplicity. The cello moves through the musical landscape with jaunty rhythms and intricate passagework. On its second entrance, the pastoral theme appears in a minor mode, which gives the soloist an opportunity to perform ascending arpeggio-like figurations leading to another cadenza. The main theme regains its sunny nature for a last appearance, which surrounds virtuosic passagework for the cello.
When either the soloist or the orchestra chews the spotlight, one would not consider the performance as a successful one. However, much like the sensitive balance of nature and man-made structure of Croatia, the Zagreb Soloist and cellist Meehae Ryo seemed to be in harmony and worked together to their advantage. As the concert came to an end, audience immediately stood with excitement of what they have witnessed. I, myself, cannot wait for their next stage together; hopefully in the near future.
