Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a woman named Tanya Kobzar shares her recent nightmares as well as how she found comfort from her family’s past, mainly from a picture of her grandmother who was an army medic in WW2.
Tanya’s late grandmother inspired her to take action and help her country, Ukraine, in any way she can.
Tanya left her office job and enlisted in the army, stating the words, “I did this for my children and my country”.
In Ukraine, martial law prohibits men aged 18 to 60 from leaving the country and, rather, are encouraged to fight.
Though Ukrainian women are not included under this martial law, this brave country’s women have been serving in wars around a century longer than American women; female officers were in both WW1 and WW2.
Although the Bolsheviks declared equality between men and women in all fields of the military early on, women were not recognized officially as combat veterans with full military pensions until after the 2014 invasion of eastern Ukraine by Russia.
Despite the slower pace in officially recognizing women as combat veterans, Ukraine’s propaganda spotlights the female combatants, raising the spirits of combatants despite the wartime difficulties.
This war effort in equally accepting men and women to garner greater support from both genders only benefits the country as well as the push for greater equality between men and women as a move away from the long time patriarchal society.
Seeing Ukraine being supportive of women embracing traditionally men-held roles sparks a new era of women’s rights and equality.
