As war continues to wage on between Russia and Ukraine, hundreds of thousands of refugees are fleeing to neighboring European countries.
Although European countries willingly accepted Ukrainian refugees into their countries with open arms, this is a stark contrast to when the same countries cruelly rejected Syrian refugees from the Syrian crisis in 2015.
News outlets described Ukrainian civilians as "prosperous middle-class people," "the family next door," and "civilized." On the contrary, Syrian refugees were generally denoted as dangerous strangers who negatively affect the country, painting them as hostile criminals.
These descriptions implied that human beings could only feel pain and were only worth saving based on how they looked, what language they spoke, what religion they followed, and where they lived.
The warmth, comfort, and support provided to Ukrainian refugees are heartwarming, but Syrian refugees were forced to undergo more pain and suffering after being rejected due to fear of threats relating to terrorism.
Unfortunately, many Syrian refugees from the 2015 crisis – including children born during the conflict – continue to reside in refugee camps and makeshift shelters with horrible conditions, whereas Ukrainian refugees from the 2022 current war received residencies for a year, work permits, and free travel to other countries.
The double standard held by Western countries when non-Western countries face issues versus when Western countries face issues is evident; this dynamic must be changed.
