사계의 시작, 이제 막 봄의 문턱을 넘나드는 시점인 3월에 이태리의 유명한 휴양지인 꼬모의 호수도 그 설렘 속에 일렁거리며, 세계 곳곳의 사람들을 맞이하고 있었다. 유럽 최고의 휴양지라고 소문이 날 만큼, 다른 이태리의 관광 도시들과는 조금 다르게 여유와 한적함이 돋보였고, 성수기가 아니라 오히려 더 한가로운 거리 사이로 진짜 꼬모의 모습을 발견할 수 있었다.
그 속에서 음악을 통해 몸과 마음의 휴양을 찾는 관객들의 발걸음은 플루티스트 유재아의 입술 사이로 흘러나올 사계의 기대감과 함께 Theater Sociale로 향했다. 밀라노 챔버 오케스트라 단원들이 음을 하나하나 조율하며, 관객들의 일렁거림을 조용히 잠재우자 플루티스트 유재아가 지휘자 Hakan Sensoy와 함께 무대에 등장했다. 너무나도 화려한 연주홀의 관객석 불이 꺼지고, 오롯이 빛나는 무대 속에서 그녀와 그녀의 손에서 빛나는 플룻에 관객들은 익숙하지만 익숙하지 않은 사계에 빠질 준비를 하고 있었다.

클래식에 대한 관심이 거의 없는 사람이라 할지라도 어느 부분이라도 듣기만 하면 작곡가와 곡명을 알게 되는 사계. 안토니오 비발디의 대표작으로써 봄, 여름, 가을 그리고 겨울 각각 3악장으로 구성되어 총 12개의 곡의 서두가 펼쳐지기 시작했다.
가장 호평을 받는 봄. 가장 플룻다운 모습을 보여줄 수 있던 이 부분에서 플루티스트 유재아는 문턱을 넘길 듯 말 듯 망설이는 봄을 끌어당기며, 꽃망울을 티우기 시작했다. 하나의 플룻 속에서 다양한 새들의 지저귐을 듣는 즐거움은 바이올린과는 또 다른 매력의 봄을 선사했다. 마치 다양한 목소리를 가진 새들이 그녀의 플룻 위에 앉아 그녀의 손의 어루만짐을 기뻐하며 노래하는 것 같이 느껴졌다.
그리고 마치 바깥에서 잔잔히 흐르던 꼬모 호수의 물결이 극장 안까지 타고 들어올 것만 같았다. 그리고 이어진 여름. 느슨하다가도 치열한 바깥의 풍경을 펼쳐내는 내야 하는 특성상 작고 상냥하고 여리기만 할 것 같은 플룻 속에서 휘몰아치는 듯한 폭풍을 그려내면서 가지고 있던 의구심을 사라지게 만들었다. 또한 인간의 호흡이 만들어내는 음색과 속도에 놀라움을 감출 수 없었다.
이어진 3번째, 가을의 풍성함 속에 젖어 든 인간의 모습과 마지막으로 이어진 겨울의 차가운 얼음과도 같은 느낌은 대 자연 속에서 인간이 느끼는 안락과 치열함 사이를 반복하며 사계의 변화무쌍한 모습을 그려내었고, 이미 관객들은 단 40여 분만에 365일을 경험한 듯한 사운드에 브라바를 외치며 감탄을 연발했다.

[March 5, 2016] As Spring approaches, Flutist Jae A Yoo sings the cycle of of life through Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
Spring represents ‘start’ or ‘birth’ of something ‘new’. It is a time when many cultures celebrate a fresh start, and a better time to discuss the circle of life with one of the most recognisable work by Antonio Vivaldi: the Four Seasons. Music written around 1723 and were published in 1725 in Amsterdam, along with eight additional violin concerti, as Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione ("The Contest Between Harmony and Invention"). The four concertos are unmistakably the composer’s famous work, which had appealed to King Louis XV with grand sound and unique presentation.
It was uncommon for a conductor or director to read sonnets out loud to their audience. However, each movements are arranged with different sonnets that were to be read before the movements start. Furthermore, Vivaldi played with the artists’ imagination with instructions in music scores. Some examples include “like a barking dog” or “like a sleeping goatherd”, allowing different musicians to give unique interpretations of the piece. It is not hard to understand why this particular piece has been used in at least 100 different films and tv series, as no two performance are the same.
As Spring approaches closer, Lake Como has begun to shimmer brightly, as the sun softly shines in Como, Italy. The magnificent view of the mount
ain and their lake makes Como one of the most festive city in Europe, and classical music festival is no exception. On the start of March, flutist Jae A Yoo enters the Theatre Sociale with conductor Hakan Sensory and the Milano Chamber Orchestra, where she performed the Four Seasons by Vivaldi. While watching her mesmerise the listeners, the flutist reminded one of Demeter. Just like the greek goddess, Yoo was able to express the characteristics of each seasons: the regenerative power of Spring, the youth of Summer, the fertility of Fall and the end of Winter.
As mentioned before, the 12 movements requires much imagination by the performer since the instructions are argueably vague and all the pieces are given a sonnet, which also can be analysed in differently by person to person. While this gives the artist freedom to reform the music by their own style, it also makes it extremely challenging for the performer to fully express themselves. Yet, Yoo easily overcomes this challenge. The flutist was able to enchant her audience into her own world. In Spring, the flute chirped like a bird on a blossoming tree. During Summer, Yoo represented the fear of sudden darkness that was creeping upon the orchestra. On the other hand, Fall brought happiness and festivity for its great harvest. At last, winter has come. While it gives off many hardships, Yoo’s sound felt like a glimmer of joy and hope through the cracks of harsh winter ice. When the year’s summary concluded, the audience immediately cheered for the wonderful performance filled with so mixed and complex emotions throughout the different seasons. Even though the 40 minutes of sentimental experience seemed to have gone by so quickly, every listeners were satisfied and were prepared for the new start of 2016.
