사이판, 뉴욕타임스 '올해 사랑해야 할 세계 명소'로 선정

최근 뉴욕타임즈가 흥미로운 주제의 여행 기사를 게재했다. 해마다 추천하던 ‘ 가봐야 할 세계 명소 52 (52 Places toGo) ’ 를, 올해는 ‘ 사랑해야 할 세계 명소 52 (52Places to Love) ’ 로 발표하였다. 명소 또한, 독자들로부터 <삶을기쁘게 하고 영감과 위로를 준 장소 >로 직접추천받았다. 올해의 명소 중 한국인이 안전하게 여행할 수 있을 것 같은 곳을 추천한다면, 단연 ‘ 사이판 ’ 이다.

서태평양에 위치한 마리아나제도의 사이판은 세계에서 가장 수심이 깊은 지역으로 알려진 마리아나 해구와 접해있다. 마리아나제도 14개섬 중 하나로, 남북에 걸쳐 약 21km, 동서로는 8.8km 밖에 되지 않는다. 연중 온화한 열대 기후 덕에 아름다운 산호 해변, 깨끗하고 푸른 바다 등 때 묻지 않은 천혜의 자연 환경을 자랑한다. 한국에서 비행기로 4시간 남짓, 비교적 멀지 않은 거리라, 코로나19 이전인 2019년 한 해 동안 약 20만명의 한국인이 이 곳을 찾았다.

사이판은 코로나 청정지역이라 할 수 있다. 미국 내에서 가장 높은수준의 백신 접종율을 보이고 있으며, 코로나19 검사시 한국산 진단 키트를 사용하고 있고, 현재까지 인구의 32.5%가 검사를 진행하였다. 누적 확진자 또한 대부분 공항 입국 검역시 감염이 확인된 외부유입 승객으로 6개월 가까이 지역사회 감염이 발생하지 않았다.

미국 질병통제예방센터(CDC)에서는 지난 11월, 총 4단계로 구성된 코로나19 여행경보에서 북마리아나 제도를 가장 안전한수준인 1단계로 완화한 바 있다.

프리실라 이아코포(PriscillaM. Iakopo) 마리아나관광청 청장은 “지도상에서 마리아나제도는 작은 섬에 불과하지만 사이판을 방문하는 여행객들은 우리 섬이 가진자연의 아름다움, 역사와 지역의 다양성, 따뜻한 환대에 놀라곤한다” 며 “마리아나제도는 자연을 통해, 마음을 치유받게 만드는 이상적인 장소이다. 다시 안전한 여행이 가능해 질때 한국 관광객분들이 마리아나제도의 대자연을 더욱 깊이 경험하면서 따뜻한 힐링을통해 코로나19로 지친 마음을 위로 받기 바란다”고 밝혔다.사이판 여행이 현실성 있게 다가 오는 데에는, 사이판현지교민과 관련여행업계 종사자들의 노력도 한몫한다.

지난 2020년12월 30일 김홍균 사이판 한국문화원장 (이하 원장)은 도종환 문화체육관광위원장과의 미팅을 통해, 한국-사이판 양국 간의 TravelBubble을 협약하는 구체적인 현안을 다루었으며, 향후 사이판 여행에 대한 실질적인 방안들을 논의하였다.

또한, 사이판 주지사 RalphTorres의 서신을 정세균 국무총리에게 전달하기도 하였다.

김홍균 사이판 한국문화원장은 “ 안전한 여행이 될 수 있게 하는 것이 중요하다.” 며, 제도적 장치의 중요성 또한 강조했다. 급변하는 코로나 정세로 예측하기어려운 변수들이 존재하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고, 사이판은지역감염이 없는 청정지역 상태를 유지하고 있으며 안전한 사이판 여행이 가능해질 수 있도록 끝까지 힘쓰겠다고 의지를 밝혔다.

사이판은 또한 ’2022 태평양 미니 게임’ 을 준비중이다. 태평양 지역 국가가 참여하는 2022 태평양 미니 게임은 사이판, 티니안, 로타섬이 있는 북마리아나제도에서 개최되며, 약 24개국에서 400 ~600여 명의 선수들이 육상, 배드민턴, 야구, 골프, 비치발리볼, 철인 3종 경기를 포함하는 6개 종목에 참여할 것으로 예상된다.

The New York Times recently published a travel article on an interesting topic. The annual “52 Places to Go”, which was recommended every year, was announced this year by changing it to “52 Places to Love”.

The attraction was also directly recommended by readers. (Where readers can recommend their most favorite and memorable places to visit) Today, I recommend a place where Koreans can safely travel among this year's attractions, the island of “Saipan”.

Saipan is located in the Northern Mariana Islands, located in the Western Pacific Ocean, borders of Mariana Trench, known as the deepest oceanic trench in the world. It is one of the 14 islands of the Mariana Islands, spanning about 21 km from north to south and only 8.8 km from east to west due to the year-round temperate of tropical climate, it boasts of unspoiled natural environments such as beautiful coral beaches and sparkling blue seas. With short travel time and close proximity to Korea, about 200,000 Koreans visited this place in 2019, before COVID19 pandemic crisis.

Saipan is considered as one of the US State which effectively implemented COVID19 preventive measures and has the lowest rate of virus victim . It also has the highest vaccination rate in the United States; use a Korean-made diagnostic kit to test for Corona 19, and 32.5% of the population has performed the test so far. Most of the cumulative confirmed cases were passengers from outside who were confirmed to be infected during the airport entry and quarantine, and no community infection occurred for 6 months until this date.

Last November 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) relaxed the ban on travel to Northern Mariana Islands and declare it to be in the safest place to travel on CDC COVID19 Travel Alert.

Priscilla M. Iakopo, Director of the Mariana Tourism Board, said,

“On the map, the Mariana Islands are just a small island, but travelers to the Mariana Islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota are often amazed by the natural beauty, history and diversity of the region, and the warm hospitality of our islands.”

“The Mariana Islands are an ideal place to explore, connect, and open minds to nature. When the trip becomes safe again, I hope that Korean tourists will also experience Nature in the Mariana Islands more deeply and comfort and heal the tired mind from Corona 19 through warm hospitality.”

The efforts of local residents of Saipan and related tourism industry workers also contribute to the realistic approach of Saipan travel. On December 30, 2020, the head of the Korean Cultural Center of Saipan, Mr. Kim Hong-Kyun, had a meeting with member of Congress of Korea Do Jong-hwan (Former Minister of Culture and Sports of Korea) to discuss the specific of the Travel Bubble agreement between Korea and Saipan. He also delivered a letter written by Saipan Governor Ralph Torres to Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun. The CNMI &Korean Gov’t are finalizing the implementation of this program and hopefully will materialize soon.

The '2022 Pacific Mini-Game' will be held in Northern Mariana Islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota, in which countries from the Pacific regions shall also participate.
