[March 20th 2016] Pianist Sun Young Ro and Cellist Meehae Ryo
Pianist Sun Young Ro and cellist Meehae Ryo have proved themselves powerful soloists on their stage. However, the two artists also performed together on several occasions, leading them to develop their distinctive style. Their strength creates throbbing music, yet their sound carry warmth; making their instruments sound deep and comforting.
On March 20th, in Germany, the duo played a wide range of compositions under the theme titled ‘Das romantische Cello’ (the romantic cello). The concert began with a strong, heart-wrenching piece by G. Cassando. While the pieceis written beautifully, it is thankless at the same time. The composition challenges the cellist in using the thumb position. All eyes were on Ryo of her extraordinary artistry and incredible skills, as she was able to overcome those challenges with ease.
Moving onto the next part of the programme, Ro and Ryo flawlessly played through pieces written by composer C. Debussy, F. Chopin, D. Popper, C. Saint-Saens, A. Pizzolla and ended the programme with P. I. Tchaikovsky. The audience stares in silence, as they did not wish to disturb the atmosphere. As the piano and the cello concluded their performance in one clean united strike; the listeners took a moment to catch their breath. Then after a beat, the people cheered in thankfulness of wonderful music.
If Sun Young Ro and Meehae Ryo wanted to amaze the audience, they have succeeded to do so. The two ladies stood up from their chairs with a shy, yet happy expression and bowed to their listeners. While the concert may have ended, the two extraordinary musicians have left a lasting impression on the audience.
