Vienna, home of culture, music and Mozart. The city is filled with his music and portraits as if Mozart himself represents the people of Austria. With his presence in every corner of the street, even the ones who have no opinion on the genre instantly falls in love with the romantic pieces of classical music. And in this city, Pianist Soyeon Kang returned to shake the hearts of men and women, just like she did in 2014 in the Golden Hall of Musikverein with Mozart Piano Concert No. 23 in A Major, KV. 488.
Mozart had a way with the piano concerto like no other composer before or after him. Building upon the achievements of two of J. S. Bach's sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian, he gave the word "concerto" an entirely new meaning. He took over the idea of alternating orchestral and solo passages, as well as a few other basic structural elements; however, he considerably expanded on the earlier form, making it both more complex and more flexible. In his hands, the piano concerto became capable of expressing the most diverse characters, from grandiose and festive to lyrical and intimate, with innumerable shadings in between. Mozart used A major on numerous occasions in symphonic works, as well as in chamber and vocal music. He wrote two piano concertos in that key: No. 11 (K. 414) in 1782 and No. 23 (K. 488) in 1786. Both share the bright, sunny disposition that characterises Mozart's A major. But the later work is significantly broader in its scope and exemplifies Mozart's concerto style at its most mature and refined.
The Allegro first movement, with double exposition, goes by the rules of structure for the most part, although there is an incursion of drama in the development section plus a through-written cadenza, rare in his mature concertos. Rather than an Andante, the slow movement is the only Adagio in all of Mozart's concertos, with melancholy taking centre stage that heretofore had hovered in the wings. Startlingly and somberly the key is F sharp minor, not really leavened by a sweet subject in A major for flute and clarinet. After two introverted movements, the second one confined to a sickroom, the rondo-finale rallies ebulliently - an Allegro assai among the most buoyant in Mozart's concerto canon, with key-changes and even high comedy that find the patient recovered and happy, as are all of us are who have been worried till now about his health.
Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 is not an easy piece to perform with a fresh intake, as the composition has been extremely popular since its debut. However, with the melancholy and high comedy within the music, one could find an underlying strange emotion found by the pianist herself. It was a mixture of sadness and revenge, despair and anger. Many of the audience took this foreign, yet familiar feeling by surprise, further proving that Kang was capable of mixing different cultures into one glorious expression. It was hard not to laugh and be touched by her bitter-sweet song from her piano, and it is the one concert experience people are not likely to forget.
