[March 19, 2016] Soprano Sooyeon Kim stands on stage to commemorate Mozart
The performance given by Soprano Sooyeon Kim at the Musikverein Golden Hall was, at the very least, impressive. The word ‘impressive’ may seem too simplistic for such a grand performance, yet there are no other adjectives to describe.
On March 19th, Kim gave three wonderful opera pieces: “Dove sono” from <Le Nozze di Figaro>, “ Allora rinforzo i stridi miei...Or sai, chi l’Onore” from <Don Giovanni> and “Ach, Ich fühls” from <Die Zauberflöte>, which are all written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Like most of his compositions, the composer has put all of his emotion and passion into his works. However, these are opera music, thus making it challenging for the singer to emote fully without the help of props, costumes and the context of the story; which Kim overcame.

While the three opera compositions are unrelated to each other, as they are written for different plays, the Soprano made it seem like a flowing narrative of a tragic character. As soon as Kim hit the first note, one could immediately hear the denial and confusion just from her voice. It was as she was the Countess in the opera, denying her end of happiness; rather than playing as the Countess. On the second piece, her face was filled with rage. Her character was prepared to use any method to achieve revenge. At last, in her final part, Kim expressed the pain and sadness she was going through. This alarmed many of the audience, as the tone carried a very dark element and it felt as if the Soprano accepted it.
As the Budapest Symphony Orchestra MAV and Soprano Sooyeon Kim gave a heartfelt conclusion, the audience cheered quietly. Not because the performance was bad, but because the listeners had a hard time shaking off the devastating emotions they felt through Kim’s voice. It was the perfect reaction to such a sorrowful performance that Kim was able to achieve just through her voice and expression.
