필자가 샌프란시스코 북부 San Anselmo에 있는 ‘샌프란시스코신학대학원(San Francisco Theological Seminary)’ 미국유학시절 가졌던 추억을 되새기며, 샌프란시스코와 더불어 미국 서부의 대표적인 관광지로 꼽히는 그랜드캐니언과 아름다운 드라이브 코스까지, 도심과 자연이 어우러진 캘리포니아로 여러분을 초대한다.

샌프란시스코의 상징 ‘금문교’

금문교 또는 골든게이트교는 미국 캘리포니아주(州) 서안의 샌프란시스코만(灣)과 태평양을 잇는 해협에 설치되어 있는 다리로, 길이 2,825m. 금문교(金門橋)라고도 한다. 남안의 샌프란시스코시와 북안의 마린반도를 연결하는 최단거리에 놓인 6차선 자동차 전용 현수교이다. 1933년에 착공하여 1937년에 준공된 이 다리를 매어단 탑높이는 약 227.5m이고, 주탑(主塔)과 주탑 사이의 거리가 1,280m나 된다. 중앙부는 해면에서 70m 높이에 있으며, 수심이 깊어 다리 밑을 대형 선박이 통과할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 비행기도 통과할 수 있다. 붉은색의 아름다운 교량은 주위의 경치와 잘 조화를 이루어, 짙은 안개와 함께 샌프란시스코의 상징이 되어 있다.

샌프란시스코는 수많은 미국 도시 가운데서도 여행자를 매료시키는 요소를 많이 가지고 있다. 미국 서부 캘리포니아에 위치한 항구 도시, 샌프란시스코. 길게 뻗은 빨간색 금문교와 도심 언덕을 넘나드는 고풍스러운 케이블카가 여행의 운치를 더한다. 다양한 문화가 공존하고 자유로운 분위기가 가득한 이곳은 미국에서 가장 살기 좋은 도시로 꼽힌다. 혹독한 추위가 없고 연중 20도 전후의 봄 날씨를 유지하고 있어서 지금 여행을 출발하여도 한국기온과 비슷하여 지금 방문해도 너무 좋다.

특히, 겨울을 빼고는 비가 거의 오지 않아 언제라도 방문하기 좋은 곳이다. 또한 샌프란시스코에서 차를 타고 도심을 조금만 벗어나면 웅장하고 경이로운 자연을 만날 수 있다. 그중 27㎞의 드라이브 코스가 펼쳐진 몬트레이와 세계 7대 불가사의 중 하나인 그랜드캐니언이 자리 잡고 있다. 샌프란시스코의 해안선을 따라 남쪽으로 약 200㎞ 떨어진 곳에 몬트레이만이 위치한다.

Towering Canyons of Grand Canyon

I'd like to introduce a few tourist attractions of California where cities and nature are well put together. They include a couple of landmark places of the city of San Francisco, where I have been for my graduate degree at San Francisco Theological Seminary, and Grand Canyon, a major tourist spot of the West, and an attractive driving route from the city of Monterey to Grand Canyon.

Golden Gate Bridge, the Landmark of San Franscisco

The Golden Gate Bridge is a world-famous suspension bridge, 2,825 meters long and 27 meters wide, connecting the southern coast of San Francisco Bay with the northern coast of Marine Peninsula. The construction of the bridge began in 1933 and finished in 1937. The main towers that support the suspensions of the bridge are 227.5 meter high from sea-level and the distance between towers is 1,280 meters. The middle part of the bridge is 70 meters high from the sea-level. The distance between the bridge and the water is so high that not only big ships but also air planes can go through under the bridge.

The red color of the bridge is well-matched with surrounding scenes. The bridge, especially with deep fog, is representing San Francisco and has become an icon of the city. Compared with many other cities of the United States, San Francisco has many attracting elements. For example, the city is an attractive port city situated in the West, and the straight-lined red Golden Gate Bridge and old-fashioned cable cars (or trolley cars) which run hilly streets of the city are adding travel attractions to the city. The city is counted as one of the best cities in the United States, with cultural diversity and free spirit.

The city is free of severe cold weather, always around 20 degrees Celsius, maintaining spring weather condition all year round. You may visit it now because the temperature there is similar to that of Korea now. It doesn't rain except during the winter so that you may visit the city at anytime if not in the winter. If you drive out a bit from the city, you will soon meet awesome and breathtaking scenery of the nature.

The 27 kilometers driving tour route runs from Monterey to Grand Canyon. The Monterey Bay is located 200 kilometers south from San Francisco Bay.
